Throughout our course, we have looked at the lives of those economically disadvantaged in our society. We have talked about the causes and effects of poverty on individuals and communities and looked at multiple in depth sociological studies. I have come to the conclusion that sociological research is not relevant until it is grounded in rigorous analysis that takes into account the complex nature of social categories. Likewise, sociological analysis means nothing in a vacuum. Its value lies in the actions that people take because of the new information that they hold. In this essay, I will use the sociological concepts we have reviewed in class as a lens to reflect on my experience with developing my own sense and understanding of empathy in order to prove the importance and relevance of empathy in relation to the field of sociology. Ever since I arrived at Brandeis, I have been visiting a local day shelter (or day center) in Waltham that provides meals and case management services to folks experiencing homelessness and poverty. It is a â€Å"wet shelter,† which means that the staff welcomes everyone, regardless of whether or not they are using substances as long as they are not actively using in the space. Through spending time at the center and having conversations with the guests there, I have learned what empathy looks like, why it is important, and how to access it.
